The joys of youtube!

I just stumbled across a rare Talat Mahmood song on youtube and just have to talk about it! Its a song originally sung by Mohammed Rafi for the film Bhabhi (1955). According to lovehumanity who posted it, this was recorded by HMV as part of their VERSION RECORDINGS series in the 50s where they had famous singers sing popular songs of other singers.

Here's the original song in Bhabhi:

I never knew famous Bollywood singers ever recorded songs sung by other famous singers (except lately as homage to legendary movie figures) and its a treat to have Talat Mahmood and Mohammed Rafi versions of a great song.
I loooove youtube!!! :-)

  2. I know, me neither! Never know what else youtube may bring forth... And what makes the Talat Mahmood version so great is that it was recorded in the same decade as the original so the music and recording techniques are similar and you dont thinks its like one of those Anuradha-Paudwal-sings-every-famous-Bollywood-singer's-songs!

  5. I've gotten to love YouTube too. As must be obvious, since I've done hundreds of posts of YouTube clips on my blog in the past year.

I'm addicted to it mainly for music clips and dance clips (and ideally both in one). Though sometimes, as you know, we can find whole movies here too.

Unfortunately, we do have this phenomenon where YouTube clips disappear (and I guess we all know why that is...). Someone's been very vigilant about removing clips in the past few days. And in my browser, at least, right at this moment, one of the clips in your post here is already gone. Though that's a problem that is sometimes fairly quickly and easily resolved...

  6. Hey thanks for letting me know that the video wasnt working, Richard. Just put another version of it! It is sad when perfectly good videos disappear suddenly.

I think what makes youtube so addictive is that you can find videos of everything under the sun and there is something for everybody and for every mood!

  7. Hi Bollyviewer, You are so right - there is something on You Tube for everyone. Even my one and a half year old son loves youtube!! Would you by any chance know of Hindi songs sung by children (or picturised on children) that can be seen on youtube? Two songs that I have found - 'lakdi ki kathi' (Masoom) and 'masterji ki aagayi chitthi' (Kitab) are currently my son's favourite but I am getting a bit tired of them!!!

  8. Lakdi ki kaathi is such a fun kiddie song but there arent many like that. Why dont you try Daadi amma daadi amma maan jao, Chun chun karti, Chanda chamke cham and Nani teri morni ko mor (whose original video I cant find on youtube but this might not be bad)? Let me know if your son likes any of my childhood favorites! :-D

  12. theBollywoodFan you are welcome! I love trawling through youtube and finding these unexpected treasures! I was thinking of Bum bum bole as a great kiddie song too, but couldnt find it on youtube when I tried. Guess I need to hone my fishing skills! :-)

Ruchi, your son clearly has superior tastes - Dadi amma dadi amma is one of my favorites too! ;-)

  13. Hey Bollyviewer, thanks for the visit. I have always loved the Rafi rendition (though I had heard Talat Version too). There is a series of such cover version songs sung by Lata Ji for a 2 Cassette Set HMV released in late 80s, its called Shraddhanjali, where Lata ji sings songs of Mukesh, K.L.Sehghal, Md. Rafi etc.

The Helen : Queen Of Nautch Girls videos aren't playing on your blog..gonna Tag U on that :)

  14. @ Ruchi though Pappu Can't Dance Sala is not a Kiddie Song but kids these days are hooked to it. I don't know how to put a link here :(

  15. Welcome Toonfactory. I have heard the Shraddhanjali series but was unaware that apart from such tributes and live concerts, big names actually recorded songs sung by other singers and in 50s too. I love the Rafi version as well, but having the Talat version is such a bonus!

O the Helen video is gone! :-( Why does youtube remove stuff so efficiently! I'm afraid I didnt get the Tag U reference.

  17. Wowie! loved Talat's version too. It's awesome. I think the lyrics are different than Rafi's version. My dad would love to listen to this one. We are fans of both the singers. Tell me about youtube being addictive. :D It's a blessing. Thanks for sharing this one.
